SFDR Aquisition/Questions
Question:
Well congratulate me. I just aquired a silverface Deluxe Reverb. I’ve wanted a lower-wattage Fender for some time and git a great deal on this one – a trade of a keyboard amplifier with a keyboardist friend. I wasn’t using the keyboard amp, he wasn’t using the DR… Based on the line-out jack on the back it was made ‘79 or after. It’s got the pull boost. I think it sounds great at the low volumes I’ve been allowed to play it at (with wife and daughter obsessing over "Lost" on TV in the next room). It’s a little scraped up. The tolex is missing in a couple places and black paint disguises the bare wood. The grill cloth is pretty frayed in places too. I don’t care about that. The two things I do want to address are: 1) the trem doesn’t work. I attached a known good footswitch with no success. I tried swapping V5 with V1 without success. I’m guessing the amp was either modded to bypass the trem, or it’s the roach. Comments? Suggestions? 2) The ground pin on the power plug is gone. I’ll go get a replacement and put it on. I believe there is a correct way to wire the plug. I assume when I cut off the original plug I’ll find green, white and black wires. I further assume green goes to ground. It makes a difference which pin is attached to white and which to black, correct? What goes where? -Scott McKnight

Very cool deal!!! I should look up the keyboard players in my area, and see if they have any guitar gear they’d like to trade. >Based on the line-out jack on the back it was made ‘79 or after. I’ve never heard the trem in my Princeton Reverb! >2) The ground pin on the power plug is gone. I’ll go get a >replacement and put it on. I believe there is a correct way to wire >the plug. I’d just cut off the existing plug, and figure out which color wire goes to which connection using a DMM, and hook the new one up the same way. But that doesn’t mean that it’s hooked up properly inside the amp. I think that’s outlined somewhere on the aga website. Pete — You call that limping? I can limp circles around you! –Yumi
Response:
With new modern replacement plugs, the gold (brass) connection is for the black (hot) wire. The silver connection is for the white (neutral) wire. The green is for ground. If your plug does not have gold/silver, the smaller prong is hot and the larger prong is neutral. -DA

Nice score! Non-working tremolo is probably the roach. They cost around $7. First check the solder on the PCB at those 3 large ceramic caps, though. Original cord wiring is probably just fine. If you don’t mind an ugly big yellow plug, just get a plug end and keep the old cord intact. Otherwise, you’ll have to go through the rigamarole of attaching it to the old convenience outlet. This is more of a nuisance with a SF than with a BF since they tended to use crimped and soldered connections on the outlet there rather than a solder lug with a hole in it. If you don’t use the pull-boost, you may want to replace the reverb driver’s cathode resistor with a 2.2K resistor/25uF cap parallel pair. Much more gentle to the reverb drive tube. I think your amp doesn’t have a cathode bypass cap on the reverb driver, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen one so I could be wrong. I just overhauled a nice brown tremolux head belonging to a fine keyboard player. It’s not that great of a KB head, but it’s just lovely for guitar. Maybe he’ll swap me for my ugly but useable PV Deuce-VT.

Mike, Thanks for the info. FWIW, my friend was using a Blues Deluxe on the bottom and a Motion Sound on top for a keyboard amp. He opted to hold on to the BD for guitar/whatever but will now use a big Roland keyboard amp w/ the Motion Sound. Also FWIW, a Peavey Deuce II was my first guitar amp. Thanks again, -Scott McKnight

I’ll second that! >Non-working tremolo is probably the roach. They cost around $7. First >check the solder on the PCB at those 3 large ceramic caps, though.
In a few different cases I’ve had broken leads on those particular caps; tread lightly. >Original cord wiring is probably just fine. Well, considering nearly *very* old Fender I’ve seen had that convenience outlet wired with the polarity reversed, now may be a good time… They might have found it by ‘79. >If you don’t use the pull-boost, you may want to replace the reverb >driver’s cathode resistor with a 2.2K resistor/25uF cap parallel pair. >Much more gentle to the reverb drive tube. You traded an amp and a keyboard player for a Deluxe Reverb? A great deal that could only have been bettered if they would have taken the drummer instead.
Response:
That wouldn’t have worked. I’d already just traded away my only drummer for an Alesis SR-16 and a sixpack of Redhook. -Scott McKnight

You sure got the good end of that deal!

The sixpack won’t be able to keep time either, but at least it’ll have a home. Pete — You call that limping? I can limp circles around you! –Yumi

I’ve always thought even the existance of one keyboard player in this world is one keyboard player too many, but I guess I am proved wrong in this rare case.

Now now, some of my best friends have been keyboard players. :) Most of them play guitar too.
