Q — about fender bassmans
Question:
I think he’s talking about the new solid-state ones Fender put out.
Response:
Yep, the new Bassman Series….are impressive. Very efficient Emminence Drivers. Makes the BXR’s sound and even look like crap (they tilt back like the Hartke Kickbacks now, which is like a nice little stage monitor)…. To all you GK 800RB owners…..try the Fender 400H (Head version) It’s awesome…..murders the GK by far. To bad they don’t make a 1000watt version….I’d own that one. Chris

if we’re talking about the new solid state bassmans, i too think they’re pretty cool. lightweight and they have a high end sound with the addition of the tweeter. my only complaint so far is that they tend to fart out pretty easily…
Response:
My bad–he is talking about the old tube ones. I think their power-to-weight ratio is way too low to cut it these days.
Response:
Yes, but you get what you pay for…. Chris

I loved them too for many years, including blonde ones, 50’s , 70’s etc. BUT! These days you would, IMHO, be better off getting a modern small combo amp like Hartke, SWR or Peavey for bass. They are trouble free and the new solid state stuff sounds good and is as reliable as the old tube amps, even more so. Also, have you noticed the price of tubes lately? The only ones you can get are the "off-shore" variety and ask anyone, they don’t sound like the old GE’s or RCA’s you remember from back then! The new tubes rattle apart in very little time, so its up to you, but other than the nostalgic look of an old amp, a new one is the way to go for bass..

them as a guitar amp, and in a small venue they work fine for bass. One of the many things that I love about Fender amps (at least the old ones) is that you can find virtually everything needed to fix / maintain them in any Radio Shack store (if need be). They are well built, they sound great, and they last! Think about it, in the guitar field anyway……Fender’s biggest competition is THIER old stuff! Good luck, Steve Herzig.

I’m an entry level bassist who is going to buy an amp. I had good luck w/ fender guitar amps (tubed) when I was a kid so I’m looking at used fender bassmans. Specifically the 50, 70 or the 100. I also may get back into guitar someday and I’ve heard that bassmans do a fair job using the "Normal" inputs. In our local music store, the guy tells me that bassmans are not a very good amp and is trying to steer me in other directions. I had the uninformed opinion that fender tube amps are fairly decent. Is this fella on the level? I’ve also got 16 years of electronic experience in the AF and I doubt that the fender’s circuits would ever be much of a challenge if there were a problem — no ICs — GREAT! I’m thinking of spending about 200 to 300 for the amp alone and building the speaker cab. Comments Please — Old iron rules OK. Before you buy.
