distortion pedal suggestions

Question:

> > Can anyone suggest a good distortion pedal for bass?

Funny that, I’ve been on the lookout for the same thing. I’ve tried a few so far : Marshall Guv’nor, Boss ODB-3, Boss SD-1 among others and they’ve all sounded pretty crap to me. Too metallic sounding and a loss of bottom end reslting in very tinny distortion. Tried an EHX Big Muff Pi yesterday and bought it along with the EHX BassBalls. I’m very impressed with the Big Muff. Ranges from a slight grit to mass fuzz. Coupled with the BassBalls I managed to get some great analogue synth squelching sounds. Not what you were looking for but sweet nonetheless :) The best distortion I ever managed to get out of my bass involved bi-amping. I ran a clean signal into my Trace and then another signal into a mate’s Fender guitar amp set on the overdrive channel. Absolute heaven!!! Really nailed that Cliff Burton tone. If you can afford it then I suggest going down this route. Otherwise, try the Big Muff and see what you think. Hope this helps in your quest for fat overdriven sounds!! laters, s/.

my solution is: I use a Boss MT-2 with a Boss LS-2 line seleector pedal so i can blend my original signal with the distorted signal…so i keep all my low end! yay! — Kristoff Lajoie www.kristoff.4t.com

Kristoff, tell me more about this pedal. I read the web site, and see two fx loops…but I don’t have a good idea about what goes into the pedal, what comes out and what the knobs and the switch do.   I like the split signal possibilities…can you tell me more?

I like the MT-2, have used one for years…I may have to try that line selector unit, it sounds like a good idea.

Thanks!  These generalizations that sweep over entire manufacturer’s product portfolios are very useful in product selection.  Do you currently work at Guitar Center perchance? Oh, and were you aware that Harman is the parent company to both DOD and Digitech…making them the same company?         http://www.harmanmusicgroup.com/history.htm Have a lovely day. road for what seems like ages! Can I differentiate here between distortion and overdrive. Distortion can be achieved via numerous effects pedals, sum buzzy others quite good, but most seem to erase the bottom end unless there is some type of ‘blend’ of the new and original signal. I found the EHX Big Muff about the best. With regards overdrive, this can only effectively be gained (sorry about the pun) with valves. Whether a valve pre amp, all valve head or a unit like the EHX Hot tubes. I have never found an effects unit without valves that produces dynamic overdrive. In my eternal quest, I will receive next week two Ashdown ABM RPM EVO valve pre amps (I run my RIC in stereo). These baby’s have switcheable two stage valve drive and give true dynamic overdrive via twin Ecc83’s. Not cheap but sound sooooooooo good. — AlunP www.jurassica.org

I have a Black Cat Bass Octave Fuzz, which I like a lot.  There’s a lot of variability to the sound, and I can go from an almost-slightly-overdriven sound to raspy incomprehensible fuzz.

Yep, there are distortion and fuzz boxes made for bass (specifically to keep the bottom from dropping out). Since you complained about not getting enough distortion, maybe you need a true fuzz. A few fuzz and distortion boxes are: Zachary Vex Woolly Mammoth www.zvex.com – this is pretty exotic and is a full-out nutso fuzz with neat one-of-a-kind effects plus hand painting and ultralow current drain and true bypass for $259 (lowest price seen on Web) Fulltone Bass-Drive www.fulltone.com – much more common, actually can be considered two boxes in one, a "fattening up" booster as well as an overdrive (not a nutso fuzz) with true bypass for $179 (lowest price seen on Web) Frantone Lo-Tone Classic Fuzz www.frantone.com – less common, the current version is cream colored and is a real fuzz with true bypass for $175 (lowest price seen on Web) Dredgetone Angler (Bass version) www.dredgetone.com – this one has a line driver instead of a true bypass. If you remember back when it was a new idea, line drivers are used to maintain highs through long runs of instrument cable. Said to fatten things up and approximate true amplifier crunch (not all-out crazed fuzz) with best sensitivity to the player’s hands. This is the one I went for, available at www.pedalgeek.com for $115 shipped. I just may leave it on all the time (for that touch of crunch when I’m loudest). Check out the reviews at www.bgra.net and www.harmony-central.com Eventually I can see collecting the whole herd, and probably a Black Cat Bass Octave Fuzz, too.

hi the only i bought was a DOD FX53 B; without try it before. it’s the crappiest sound i’d ever heard. i use a morley wha bass, the blue one, and it’s a great pedal; with a wha sound different than the "classic" cry baby sound. more modern; a pleasure who work very well, and specially very well with a boss octaver OC2. — basst
