Need to be louder !
Question:
If I add more speakers to my SS amp .. Will it make it louder ? It only has one 8 inch speaker, but when my neighbor is playing drums, he drowns me out. Man this electric guitar is great .. but I need to be louder than everyone else.

The last sentence makes your message look like a joke, but I’ll answer anyway. Your amp is a very important part of your tone, and yours may just be not the right one. BUT, check the back to see what the minimum impedance rating is, and what impedance speaker is in there. With a solid state amp, you will get the highest output at the minimum rated impedance. Also, speakers are not created equally. Some are MUCH louder than others at the same power input. Look at the sensitivity or efficiency rating, usually given in db at 1W at 1M. Now, let’s address your situation. Suppose your amp is rated for 4 ohms, and you have an inefficient 8 ohm speaker in it. Adding an efficient 8 ohm extension speaker (like a Celestion Vintage 30) *could* make it noticeably louder, because of the extra power by dropping the load to 4 ohms, and the added efficiency of the new speaker. But ask yourself whether you might do better by replacing your amp with something that has more power, is a tube amp, or preferably BOTH.

Of course it will. That only logical isn’t it? > It only has > one 8 inch speaker
Then you need at least eight more because of the "Rule of Twos" which goes 8 (your original speaker) x 2 = 16 x 2 = 32 x 2 = 64 and since 8 squared is 64 that will mean you’ll be twice as loud. > Man this electric guitar > is great .. but I need to be louder than everyone else.
You also have to hit those strings harder.

Sell the guitar. Buy a set of drums. The Repair Guy http://repairguy1993.netfirms.com/

Generally yes but for an array of varying reasons, any of which can be lessened by other factors… First make sure your amp can safely accept an ext speaker at the impedance you will wire it to, so you dont fry it. Some reasons you will be louder… A SS amp will deliver more power to lower ohm loads so if you hook two 8 ohm speakers in parallel you will present a load of 4 ohms to the amp and be louder. Assuming your current speaker is 8 ohm. More cone area will move more air given the same amount of cone motion per speaker as one speaker. Arraying the 2 speakers vertically on top of each other will create a mini line array that will exhibit less drop as the listener moves away, (this is an acoustical phenomenon with arrayed speakers). Some of the hundreds of negating factors… Of which the efficiency rating of the speaker is most important, if your second speaker is of low efficiency you may not add any additional volume for your effort. The available clean headroom of the amp with whatever impedance you arrived at, if the amp is into breakup mode then you wont have enough clean power to cut through anyway. Amps that can still play clean with volume pot on 7 are going to be louder than amps that already break up with volume pot at 3. The latter amps are best miced to a PA to both retain the desird break up tone and also boost volume.

Get a quieter drummer, it’s cheaper than a louder amp. I guess running two power cords to your SS turd didn’t solve your problem the last time ?

Is it just me or have you guys been duped?
Response:

No. But more speakers will be making sound. If you do a db on you SS amp itself, it *still* won’t be making any sound. >It only has >one 8 inch speaker, but when >my neighbor is playing drums, he >drowns me out.
That’s good. Drummers are supposed to be louder than a SS amp with an 8" speaker. If you find one that isn’t, ask him if his name is Karen Carpenter while you hand him a cheeseburger. >Man this electric guitar >is great .. but I need to be louder than everyone else.
I’ve heard goat skin banjos that were louder than SS amps with 8" speakers. And sounded better while doing it too. Pete

That’s why I gave the disclaimer "looks like a joke" before my response.

A mouse pissing on a cotton ball on goat skin banjo under the cone of silence is louder than a SS amp with an 8" speaker. And it sounds much better… 8^)

I think your confusing his drummer with the song by the late Johnny Cash " The Boy Named Sue" . Ok .. When I was in HS in the mid 70’s … Karen C was *hot* .. back when they had all those cheesy evening TV shows like Sonny & Cher, Carol Burnett … Ray Fox .. Donnie & Marie ( She has hot in a very Mormon sinful type way too) . Her and the Capt & Tinnile were on TV allot. Not to mention the babe from Quarter Flash playing saxophone.

Does that depend on which side of the COS you’re on? http://www.privacyclue.com/blog-images/coneofsilence1.jpg Some say that a SS amp with an 8" speaker *is* the Cone Of Silence. >And it sounds much better… 8^)
Sorry about that chief. Missed it by *that* much! Would you believe… a solid state amp with TEN 8" speakers?

Well, 0 * 10 * 8 = 0 8^)

Is the amp on your shoulder, pointed into your ear? Why not? __ Steve .
Response:
That Code Of Silence picture is weird. Did you get that from the Sfi FX TV show ? A cabinet with 10×8 speakers is kind of what I’m thinking of getting. A whole tall stack of speakers.
Response:
That doesn’t make sense. I asked my new step dad what that meant (he’s real smart, he finally got his GED card last month) and he thinks those numbers should add up to 18, not 0.

The Code Of Silence doesn’t allow me to explain The Cone Of Silence. >Did you get that from the Sfi FX TV show ?
The best that there ever was. >A cabinet with 10×8 speakers is kind of >what I’m thinking of getting. A whole tall stack of speakers.
That would be louder than not plugging your amp in. Pete

He spends a lot of time sitting on the steps? >what that meant (he’s real smart, >he finally got his GED card last month)
Which is more than most of us can say. >and he thinks those numbers should add up to 18, not 0.
Ask him if 18 * 1 / 0 = 18
