Cable for DI

Question:

I’m not sure I’m understanding you here. Do you mean playing the guitar through a HiFi system with a guitar cord for pluging ? The flat amplification (as an HiFi system can do) of a guitar will result in a very VERY medium sound with almost no highs and no definition. It’s the real sound of guitar pickups. The preamp section of a guitar amp precisely correct that to make it nicer by boosting highs and cutting mids. There’s also the issue of the signal intensity that you’ll feed your Hifi with. I’m not sure it’s appropriate for that use. DI is a term used in the context of guitar recording and means Direct Input as opposed to sound capture by a microphone in front of a speaker cabinet. In DI recording, you plug the guitar to some DI box that probably changes the signal intensity, the impedance and the equalization to make it sound as if captured through a microphone in front of a speaker cab. This DI box is then plugged into a recording device (computer, multitrack, stereo, mp3 player/recorder…). All of the stages through which a guitar signal runs are crucial for the final, typical guitar sound you’d expect. Run a guitar amp on HiFi speakers and the sound will be weird, very clear, very definite, almost synthetic. Run your guitar through a stereo and guitar speakers, the sound will be very very bassy and mediumish. Plug your preamp out directly into your computer "mic in" and the sound will lack texture and gain. So the conclusion is that your guitar cable has no responsibility in the sound you get. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Is a guitar cord OK to use for DI? Or is there something better.
