Although they seem to be catching on with a certain crowd by now, Sovtek heads seem to be a real nice amp with an OK price.  I think Doug Roccaforte has done a few things to some of these for customers, and I guess they end up being a killer amp.  I hear that the Mig 60 has the most possibilities.  I’ve never owned one though. Uh…. and Rich…  the VT-40 I’ve been telling you about for over a year next month…!!!! It hasn’t been used in over ten years. I’ll let you ‘bring-it-up’ slowly, and give it the eye-ball… The guy has more-or-less decided to sell it…  he’s having an arch-top built and says he won’t *need* the VT-40 again. That might mean I *have* to buy it….    :-] It doesn’t weigh as much as I thought it would…. I guess that damned HRD has got me used to haulin around a pile-o-bricks..!!!! Hmmmmm…..  I wonder what BOTH amps would sound like *together*… 2 –  4×10s….  oooooohhhhh….  I’m liking the idea…!!! If you’re a weightlifter, as I was, the VT-40 isn’t a problem. I liked the earlier one with the controls top-mounted. Rated at 40,50? watts. The loudest 50 watts I’ve ever heard. Sold mine for $225.00 and have regretted it ever since.

Rack gear is "out of favor" and represents some real bargains.  My choice is a Soho Acoustics QTR-1 preamp into a Peavey Classic 60/60 power amp. The QTR-1 is the reincarnation of the Kitty Hawk Quattro with a better power supply in a larger case.  It’s a true tube preamp at high voltages with four 12ax7.  It is technically two channels, but each channel has two levels of gain with individual level controls. It is two channel because there are two sets of tone controls, but it gives you four levels of gain at the footswitch.  $100 to $150 with footswitch, a real sleeper as they went for around $800 new. Few people even know what these are. A similar option is the Peavey Rockmaster. The Peavey Classic Series 60/60 is just a good sounding POWERFUL (60W RMS x2) power amp that can be for a little over $200 (two channels each using P/P 6L6GC with three 12ax7 in front as PI and drivers).  Maybe not as nice as a new Mesa or Marshall power amp, but the question asked for a "real deal," and the 60/60 definitely fits that bill. You can substitute a Digitech Twin Tube GFX-1 preamp if you want effects, high gain, and 120 midi presets with a floor board (make sure you get the floor board made for the unit if you want all the titles on the display, but a midi controller will also work)… OR a Hughes and Kettner Tubeman Plus (rack unit) for scooped mids and/or nu-metal tone.  (This unit is cool because it is also designed to be used in front of any guitar amp.  It will voice any solid state POS, or clean tube amp.) Any combination above should be under $400 (before shipping, off of ebay).  Add a stereo 4×12, and be prepared to be blown away (for the price).  If you think 120W is insane, the single channel Peavey can be had a little cheaper, but you can always run only one side of the 60/60. I own all of the above.  While I wouldn’t pick any of it over my Marshall JMP 2204, it is all quality gear that can be setup to sound great. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > What do you feel is great sounding underrated amp that is a real > deal?…..(until now) > David

Ampeg VT-40, VT-22 combos Ampeg V-4 head Sunn Spectrum, Sonaro and all the other guitar and bass amps they made from about 66-70….S200, etc….EL-34 powered…amazing amps. That’s what I always dig around for… later, m

Dammit Rich, I’m not ready for this one to be discovered yet. I can still get ‘em for $200 and I want to have about 40 of them before they go to the $650 they deserve. >Ampeg V-4

Wonder why more bass players haven’t latched on to this and the V4B. Probably the wattage rating is impressive for this day and age, but they’ll do most any club. The early JCM800 Marshalls have started to go up a little. Very low priced compared to what it’d cost to build that well today. Musicman. Very good build quality – better than Fender, ever. Ron

Response:

The early Traynor Bass Mate heads and combos with (2) 6V6 output tubes are great sounding amps!  The later ones employed EL84s and sound great too.  I just favor the 6V6 version.  Most still go for under $300. A friend of mine owns a Reverb Master head (cabinet had been cut down to a head before he purchased it).  His sounds fantastic.  The reverb and tremolo were nothing to write home about but the amp was magic!  $200 for the ‘ead’ and an early 70’s Fender 4×10 closed back cab. I own a Custom Reverb head that sounded like a JMP50 – killer rock amp! Again, the reverb was not my cup of tea.  Built like a tank.  I picked it up for $185. I hear the Guitar Mate amps are cool too but I’ve never played one. It seems people are catching on to the Traynor amps now that Vox/Fender/Marshall classics are becoming scarce and expensive.  Get ‘em while they’re cheap! Deaj Traynor

I’ve owned a couple of old Gibson amps over the years – they were really cool!  One amp in particular stood out.  God only knows why I sold it.  I’ll post a separate message with a question regarding the model.

<snip> Doing some recording about 12 years ago, the owner had a 2×12 tube Traynor…kinda like a Pro Reverb. I was skeptical…due to previous experiences with newer SS Traynors… but the tone and tremelo on this amp were fantastic…used it, loved it.

Response:

You guys are making me drool. So many great amps, so little cash… Another sleeper is Univox. The quality is uneven, but the good ones are tremendous amps. My favorite is the one with 2×6AQ5’s -they sold it under a couple of different model names. The Traynors are wonderful too, but the price seems to be going up on them. I’ve heard some great things about the Alamo 210 amp -I think it was called the Electra, but I’ve never gotten to play one. Chuck

Response:

Yeah, the little Alamo amps are great…most of the ones I’ve played/owned have been.  I’d love to pick up a Traynor or one of the little Sovteks before the price gets too high. later, m

Egnater 50 watt 1-12" when you can find ‘em–at gigs keeps up with (in my opinion) my cohorts BFSR tonally and volumewise. Really beats up the HR Deville (esp w/ extra cab).

I’ve had guys tell me they can see the FIRE of my passion for this stuff and music. One guy said he saw me flame up on stage one night, to him it was so obvious. To me, I was just having a good time getting LOST in the music. <thinking> In the shop, there are times where I can get very loud and intense, on the subjects I’m very passionate about. <thinking> There are basically two words you don’t want to have fly in the air around me. Just say, *Polished Turds*, and that will ignite me enough to melt the polar ice cap. <thinking> I’m equally passionate about great amps and great music Also, the great friends I made because of this shared passion for amps and music brought us together.
